WHO wrote, illustrated and published this book?
I wrote the story which was edited, designed and published by “A Kids Co.” in the US.
WHAT is it about?
‘A Kids Book about ADHD!’ is the story of my journey of understanding myself and my ADHD brain and why it works in the way it does. I tell the story from my perspective, including the laundry list of challenges I faced as a kid, as well as the assessment process and subsequent diagnosis of ADHD.
The book is designed to be read together grownup and kid to spark discussion on the topic of ADHD, and how we can harness the positive side of the diagnosis to reach our potential.
What is your favourite part of this book?
I love the imagery of having our heads in the clouds, and how that would look and feel, like drifting off on a daydream. I also love imagining the fun of bouncing off the walls and what that would be like! I had such strong visuals when I wrote these and hope the readers will enjoy the fun.
WHEN did you begin writing this book?
The idea for the story had been bouncing around in my mind for months before I actually put fingers to keyboard. I wrote the book in July 2023 whilst on holiday in Bali. I sat down at the computer and the story poured out. It took a few months from there to finesse it, with help from my wonderful editor, into the final product you can read today.
When is its release / launch date?
The book was released in January 2024.
WHERE did the inspiration for this book come from?
I have loved the book series from “A Kids Co” and have been reading them to my kids for years now. They tackle big topics such as racism, grief, empathy, failure, leadership, and many others. I wanted to write “A Kids Book About ADHD!” to help kids (and their grownups) understand and also embrace their unique brains and ways of being in the world, and harness these brains to tap into their superpowers, whatever they may be!
WHY is this book meaningful to you?
This book is special to me as it’s my very own story – how I felt when I was a kid with (undiagnosed) ADHD, growing up with various struggles, and how I was able to accept and embrace my brain for its uniqueness.
Why would its message resonate with readers?
The overall message of the book is to be understanding and accepting of other people, no matter what their challenges, abilities, or superpowers. We are all unique so we can all benefit from erring on the side of empathy rather than judgment as you never know what challenges someone else is experiencing. I hope people reading this book feel seen and understood and that the message of having a unique brain resonates with them.
HOW do you feel about the illustrations / cover design? How do they convey the feeling or mood you envisioned?
I love the bold colours and designs used for the book, as well as the lightning bolt and other attending-grabbing elements. I also love the balance of some less colourful pages to allow for some calm pauses to help the messages sink in. Whilst there are no pictures as such, the vibrant typography highlights the key elements and themes, as is the style of all A Kids Co books.
How have you promoted this book and how can we find it?
A Kids Book about ADHD! is being promoted through blogs, podcasts, and social media including @akidsco and my own Instagram @todaywewrite.
It is distributed through A Kids Co, and is available through Barnes & Noble, and Walmart in the US, Booktopia in Australia, as well as Amazon.com globally.
