Discussion

Before Reading:

Ask children if they know some strategies they can use to keep calm or calm their restless bodies.

Look at the cover of Counting to Calm: My First Self-Regulation Book. What do you see?

How do you think the child is feeling? How does it make you feel?

What does it make you wonder?

During/After Reading:

Read through the book and observe what’s happening in the pictures.

Now, let’s try:

  • Deep breathing
  • Counting to ten
  • Stretching up tall
  • Stretching down to your toes
  • Stretching arms out wide
  • Sitting down and rotating your head
  • Laying down and listening to the sounds
  • Hopping on the spot

Ask children how the story and actions made them feel. Was it helpful? When would be the best times to use these strategies?

Activity: Mindfulness Scavenger Hunt

For ages 2 to 6.

Health and Physical Education

Mindfulness and physical activity are ideal for mental, emotional and physical health, as well as building safe and healthy relationships with family and friends. Around your home, school setting or local playground, children can engage in a scavenger hunt for all of the five senses. They will need to collect items that they can:

  • SEE
  • HEAR
  • TASTE
  • SMELL
  • FEEL

Activity: Calming Sensory Jars

Children can find their calm and self-regulated happy place through meditation by watching the contents of their calming jars. Materials can include glitter or other small items.

Measure how long it takes for the contents to reach the bottom. Do you feel still and calm?

Instructions on how to make a calming jar can be found at Barley and Birch.
