Brothers can have lots of fun together, but sometimes they can disagree.
See what happens when an innocent afternoon of fun turns into complete chaos for two brothers, Toby and Jordan.
Review:
Who else can relate? Two kids getting up to mischief and causing chaos! We’ve all been there! Meet Toby and Jordan – two brothers who inadvertently turn their backyard (and their mum’s clean washing) into a wet, sandy and dirty mess! Two Can Be Trouble is a picture book splashed with fun, humour and warmth for readers who understand the joys of sibling play (and sometimes, rivalry!).
Jordan, the younger brother, simply loves to have fun. He loves to build roads and tunnels with blocks and play with toy cars, make sandcastles in the sandpit, and splash about with the water. Completely innocent, right?! But one thing leads to another, and soon, the multiplying sandcastles and puddles mean more sticky, sandy hands and unfortunately, more sticky, sandy sheets and clothes that the boys thought they’d remove from the washing line! In an attempt to save their mum’s clean washing, a white sheet turns into a footprint-stained mess. How will their mum react to the chaos she finds outside? And how will the brothers make things right?
Penny Macoun‘s sweet and amiable narrative sweeps us along in this playful scenario, causing plenty of giggles (and head shakes!) at every turn. The relationship between Toby and Jordan is adorable and heartwarming to watch, as they navigate the trouble they’ve caused as a team, and although they often don’t agree, they come together with love at the end. The gentleness of their bond is illustrated through Paul Nash‘s expressive watercolour and line artwork, combined with the bright, vibrant primary-toned colour palette and crisp backgrounds, which radiates with fun and airiness – perfect for this wet and windy backyard scene!
Two Can Be Trouble is a rollicking tale of teamwork and brotherly love, with plenty of scope for encouraging leisurely, yet responsible, outdoor play. Such a delight!
