Review:
Well, isn’t this the perfect time for celebrations?! In fact, as it turns out, EVERY DAY is the perfect time for celebrations… according to Jack Wolf! Every young reader gets to join in the party over and over and over again when this fun-loving wolf’s ‘birthday wish’ actually comes true … everyday! Hooray!
You know the feeling – a party with balloons, cake, presents, games and your best friends. Who would want that to end? On his fifth birthday, when Jack Wolf’s mum says it’s time to make a wish, he closes his eyes and blows out the candles (making sure he wishes in his head, otherwise they don’t come true). And hey presto! It’s his birthday again the next day … and the next, and the next, and the next …
Honestly, for us, the readers, you will never grow tired of turning to the next day to celebrate again with Jack and his crowded house of swinging, shaking and grooving animal friends – the disco lights, party paraphernalia, and of course, cake! (Can’t say the same for his poor mum, though, who’s birthday organisation skills are tirelessly second to none). I would have to say the same for illustrator, Alexandra Colombo – that her skills are second to none, too, because her capture of exuberance, energy, colour and the ability to bring joyful life to this book party is brilliant. The boldness of primary colours paired with texturing that is reflective of spray cans, crayons and pencils makes the magic of childhood dreams pop, well into Jack’s ripe old age, mind you, adding an extra layer of fun and humour to the already hilarious (and loveable) narrative by R.W.R. McDonald. I love the cheekiness of both Jack (wanting a million more birthdays … and presents!) and his friends, who do grow tired of Jack turning another year older every day. The comedic lines appeal to both children and adults, and the surprise ending will surely leave you gasping out of exasperation!
Zoning in on the idea of ‘too much of a good thing’ would be a great discussion point for readers, as well as pondering the effects of a birthday everyday (especially for the people around you!), and the importance of material things.
Happy Millionth Birthday is a million kinds of playful, pure joy and heart. Highly recommended party fun for everyone … everyday! Yay! 🙂
