#BookReview: Cheese On Toast, Kelly Louise Jarris (author), Baginda Adr (illus.), KLJ Books, November 2022.

Blurb:

“I don’t want this yucky roast.

I just want some cheese on toast.”

Mum has prepared a delicious roast for dinner full of healthy vegetables like green beans, peas, and carrots, but her son is not pleased. Will mum be able to convince him to give it a try?

Review:

Who’s in for a treat? A picture book crammed with meaty goodness and a little bit of spice, just like a roast turkey! Cheese On Toast is loaded with humour, interactivity and relatability that both kids and parents will devour.

We all know it well – the fussy eater. Here, we have a young boy plain and simply refusing his Mum’s roast dinner, and instead demanding the good ol’ cheese on toast. With peas being too mushy and greens being too leafy, carrots and veges just too icky, it’s clear this child would rather have a fever than eat something healthy.

The fun, repetitive rhyming refrain continues with ‘What I really want the most, is some yummy cheese on toast.’ But will a determined Mum know the trick to winning her son over with her hearty meal? I have to say, I do admire her patience, and Kelly Louise Jarris beautifully portrays a cool, calm and collected mother persisting to convince her child to try new things. It’s no easy feat!

Alongside the rollicking rhyme are the animated illustrations, in mostly bold primary blues and yellows, that portray the typically amusing facial and body expressions of stubborn children! Baginda Adr uses digital art with a mixture of strong lines and fluid shading to produce an apt cartoon feel to this humorous story. Further to the refrain that encourages readers to join in, there is a cute interactive element with the inconspicuous carrot that entices us all the way through to the end.

Encouraging confidence around mealtimes, trying new things and exploring all the senses, Cheese On Toast is also a scrumptiously funny and relatable book that will have children from age three pleading for more!

This sounds like a typical child response to veggies and a funny book, something every mother will recognize and and empathize with.
